Creating
a Science Center
Creating a science center is a great
opportunity to involved children in the wonders of
science. In most cases, you won’t need any special
school supplies to get started. Start with a small space
and create opportunities for children to use the center
individually or in small groups. If you don’t have
classroom space, create a science center outdoors
without any special teacher supplies. Remember,
effective science learning is all about physical contact
with materials and having the time to investigate and
manipulate those materials. Instead of looking for
unique school supplies, use some ordinary items and
challenge your students to find out how they work.
For example, you can create a pulley system, set out
magnifiers, mirror and magnets, grow mould or study the
science of the weather. None of these activities require
any special school supplies and will encourage students
to learn more about the world they live in. By creating
a science center without any unique teaching supplies
you’ll demonstrate to students that science is
everywhere and just waiting to be explored in every
aspect of their lives.
While teaching, remember to take advantage of every
opportunity. Instead of using strict school supplies,
check out the rain that’s falling that day, or compare
different types of mud from student’s shoes. Before you
know it, your experiences will enable you to create your
own teacher supplies and other teachers will be asking
for a copy of your teacher created materials.
