Committed Teachers Spend their own Funds on School Supplies

We all know how committed to teaching most teachers are. In fact, the majority of educators go into the profession not for the salary, but for the opportunity to mold young minds and be a part of the essential learning process. With cutbacks and reduced funding, many of these committed educators are having a difficult time finding first-rate teacher supplies, and do everything in their power to supply their students with excellent school supplies. Although this is very admirable, teachers all over the country are spending money out of their own pockets to fund first-rate school supplies.

A recent survey conducted for the Canadian Teachers' Federation found that almost 95 per cent of teachers surveyed contribute some of their own resources over and beyond those provided by the schools for teacher supplies, such as curriculum, school books and other school supplies. In fact, these teachers spend an average of $593 out of their own pocket to outfit their sparse classrooms with adequate school supplies.

According to the study, an astounding 79 per cent of teachers use their own funds to purchase school supplies such as school books - a very basic and fundamental element of the classroom. 77 per cent of teachers used their own money to purchase other school supplies. The troubling findings of this study demonstrate that if government funding isn't increased, dedicated teachers will continue to shell out their own funds for teacher supplies or look for other ways to get their hands on free stuff for teachers.
