 Getting Students Involved With Books

No amount of school supplies or carefully crafted teacher supplies can force students to develop a love of reading and other literacy activities. Although they may not like the latest book included with their school supplies, teachers can try subtle tactics to get students more involved with books.

Starting at a young age, such as preschool or kindergarten, teachers can nurture a love a literature through use of a library area. To get started, no extraordinary school supplies are needed. Look for bright colors and use them wherever you can. Use colorful throw pillows, bright furniture, walls and shelves. Then, make a comfortable reading space. The more creative you are with the space the better. You could transform a refrigerator box into a spaceship perfect for getting lost in a book in. Instead of focusing on fancy teacher supplies try setting up a table that encourages students to become their own author.

When creating a reading or library centre for children of any age, remember that expensive school supplies aren’t always necessary. Encourage students to bring old books, or have a library outing or take a trip together to a used bookstore. Together you can have an adventure with this class while finding great teaching supplies that will be beneficial in the years to come.
