Does Computer
Technology in the Classroom Discourage Girls?
Today more and more schools are
embracing technology in the classroom. They are
implementing new computer lesson plans and turning to
the Internet for research. Unfortunately, studies
(American Association of University Women Educational
Foundation) show that current methods used to teach
computer programming classes are turning girls off. It
isn’t surprising with women making up just 20 per cent
of the high-tech workforce. Although technology in the
classroom should make this an equal opportunity area,
girls don’t seem to be connecting with the programming
side of things.
With this in mind, it’s important for educators at all
levels to encourage girls to participate in using
technology in the classroom. When creating computer
lesson plans, including computer-programming lessons,
teachers need to try to encourage their female students
to get involved.
One current theory is that violent video games and
programming classes that focus too narrowly on hardware
and the mechanics of information technology are turning
off girls. One report states that girls find current
computer programming classes in high school to be
“tedious and dull” and that the games are “boring,
redundant and violent.” One way to bring them back into
the fold may be to incorporate
technology in
the classroom into more diverse subject areas.
Computer lesson plans including music, history or the
sciences may spark girls’ interest. In this instance,
teachers have to take the lead.
