Weather is Great Science

The local weather is always a topic of discussion. It’s on the news every day and an instant fallback for small talk. Shouldn’t such a hot topic be brought into the classroom? Science lesson plans on local weather are perfect for elementary education. Teachers can create science lesson plans that discuss the type of climate they live in and talk about weather patterns, such as if the weather that day was consistent with regular weather pattern or a deviation.

Remember that climate and weather are two different things. Weather describes whatever is happening outdoors in a given place at a given time, while climate refers to the long-term average of a region’s weather events. But because the two are closely related, science lesson plans usually study them together. For elementary education, more technical concepts on climate on weather may be lost on students, but basic information can make for very interesting lesson plans.

Some ideas to work into your science lesson plans include: explaining the difference between weather and climate, making wind chimes, making a weather station, or building a big bottle barometer. Look for ideas that suit elementary education, such as explaining basic concepts and information in an interactive environment.
